Dear Parents and Caregivers
As we come to
the end of Term 3 we can reflect on a lot of exciting learning that has
happened both in and outside the classrooms this term. Our Inquiry across the
school ‘Strong Mind, Strong Body, Strong Heart’ has been approached in
different ways in each class and learning team. A huge range of learning has
been shared between classes and homes – some on the internet via class blogs
and some through homework and events at school. Last Friday evening R6 hosted a
fabulous fashion show for their whanau, with music, a runway and amazing
designs. This week Team Matai are talking to families to get ideas for their
inquiry next term. There are lots of ways you can get involved in school, we
love hearing from you. Thank you to everyone who has helped in any way this
term. Keep it up in Term 4!
Our end of
term certificate assembly is on Friday this week at 9.15am. At this
assembly we celebrate one student per class who has demonstrated consistent
excellence in some aspect of school life, as well as others who have been
wonderful examples to others in academic, social and sporting areas. Everyone
is welcome to come along.
Last Thursday
the teachers and two BOT members travelled to Auckland to visit two amazing
schools (Point England & Tamaki Primary) where they are teaching classes
using 1 to 1 digital devices (ie 1 device, eg chrome book, iPod, per student).
The student engagement in learning in these very low decile schools was
fantastic to see. The learning going on was inspirational. I am sure that next
term when we have our ‘Information and sharing event’ we will tell you more
about this. The BOT will take a leading role in our development in this
exciting area.
On Monday
29 September 9.30am you are invited to come along to hear Dorothy Burt (from Point England School) talk about digital learning in our
schools. Dorothy will explain the importance of us moving with the times and
will explain some of the things we need to think about as a school community
(school, families and community) to be successful. The session is at Kuranui College. You can stay for the
introduction (until 10.30am) or for
the whole day (until 3pm). We are
able to offer this free to our parents / community members who would
like to attend. Ring our school office to book your place.
Yesterday we
had our first meeting of the school ‘Bully Free Me Club’. Members of the
group are Gaylene Hansen (mum of
Cyrus and Austen), Andrea Beckett
(mum of Ryan), Abby Cooper (mum of
Kyle and Bonnie), Karlene
Rhind-Sutherland (coordinator of Bully Free me Wairarapa), PC Dean Adams (our ‘adopted cop’ and dad
of Mia and Eli), Angela Stronge (mum
of Greta and Cassia), Wendy Taylor
(DP) and myself. We will have some students joining the group for our next
meeting at the beginning of next term. Our aim is to educate all of our school
community in what bullying is and how we can stop it – we want to make our
school bully free! Watch this space!
We have had
the exciting news that the Education Review Office will be visiting our school
in week 4 next term. This is a great opportunity to talk about the exciting
things that are happening at Carterton School. You are able to come along and
talk with them if you would like to. More information next term!

Onosai and Charlie Sherry) who have had a great attitude and improved
tremendously during the season. Thanks to Narida
Hooper for managing the team.
Brooklyn Sporting Exchange - On Friday 19 September Carterton Year 7 & 8’s travelled to
Brooklyn School for our annual sporting exchange. The first contest was in 2002.
The netballers coached and managed by Jane
Cadwallader were the stars winning both their fixtures comfortably. The
rugby players had an entertaining game going down 55-30. Brooklyn had a young
version of Jonah! The girls football put on a tremendous game with a narrow 2-3
loss and controversy over the winning goal. The boys football teams were
outclassed as was the hockey. Back at Brooklyn School the Volleyballers had a
good win and the Basketball team made up entirely from South End players put on
a good performance going down narrowly. Thanks also to Donna Saywell for providing transport and supervision. We invited
St Marys and South End to join with us this year to bolster our numbers and
provide some Carterton spirit amongst the local schools.
Term 3 finishes 3pm
this Friday 26 September and Term
4 starts at 8.55am on Monday 13 October.
A BOT member
has left the Board so there is space
for a new person to participate in the governance of the school. There are
a variety of ways the current BOT may decide to fill a vacancy, but we invite anyone who might be interested to
come along to our meeting tonight Tuesday
23 September 7pm in the staffroom.
