Dear Parents and Caregivers

This week we have the Education Review Office team of three with us at school. They are looking at every aspect of school operation. Today they are spending time in the classrooms and meeting with teachers and school leaders. It is such a pleasure to be able to have a few days to reflect on the wonderful things that have happened, are happening and will happen at Carterton School. Yesterday the school gave a wonderful welcome to the team with a powhiri in the hall. A special mention to Hāmiora G from R6 who spoke for us - he was amazing! Well done to all of the school community for making our special visitors feel so welcome from the first minute they arrived.

Tonight: Tuesday 4th November 6-7pm, Whānau Consultation Hui: we would like to share our journey, achievements and korero about our tamariki. ERO have been invited and they will be very interested to hear the developments in our school and talk to whānau about our successes, relationships and our journey. It would be great to see as many of you as possible to share our journey and feedback with them.

Kapahaka Tuakana and Ākonga Māori: Ruma ono - Kia ora koutou, ngā mihi nui ki ngā whanau!  Your tamariki were absolutely amazing at the kapahaka festival! What a brilliant performance and brilliant behaviour...6 and a half hours we were at the festival and they were awesome the whole time. To us, Kapahaka is about celebrating our culture and kotahitanga – unity, and that is exactly what our tamariki did last Thursday… joining together as one and striving for excellence, participating to the best they can be. They have stood strong, even when they find the learning challenging. Everyone’s special qualities, and everyone’s contribution was amazing! United together as one, with everyone putting great effort, commitment and love into their performing, working hard, and enjoying what we do – this is what makes us so strong and there was such amazing energy and passion that touched everyone’s heart, and we are all very proud of our brilliant performances! Thank you tamariki and whanau for making the day such a special and amazing one for us all! You were all absolutely amazing! Tumeke koutou katoa! Whaea Lesley

We need to be at the Events Centre at 5.15 to get into our costumes, ready for 6pm start, and about 7pmish finish with supper. Ngā mihi nui, Lesley Standish Ph 379 5547; 0274501554

Carterton School Newsletter 2 – 21 October 2014

Child's Name.........…………..    Rm#…..........

Dear Parents and Caregivers

What a fabulous start to Term 4 – the weather has given everyone a lift. Adults and students are enjoying the freedom of getting outside for playtimes, athletics practice and parts of their leaning programme. Don’t forget – you are welcome to come into school at any time to join in the programme. Just sign in at the office and then head to class!

On our first whole school get together of this term our school leaders were acknowledged – they were awarded ‘School leader’ badges to wear on their polo shirts. So many of our children have the opportunity to take a leadership role at our school, it is wonderful to see them grow in confidence as the years go by. Congratulations to the following student who are exemplary leaders this year: *Phaegan Hall (house captain and Health Promoting School [HPS] leader). * Matthew Scott (house captain and kapahaka leader). *Holly Hicks (House captain). *Jake McMahon (House captain). *Shaeya McPhee (House captain). *Sam Cadwallader (House captain, HPS, and a school ambassador). *Rosalie Bos (Jump Jam leader). *Rebecca Johnson (HPS leader). *Leana Malcolm-Rzoska (Jump Jam and HPS leader). *William Renall (Kapahaka leader and school ambassador.) *Sam Parker (Kapahaka leader). *Lachie Alecock (Kapahaka leader). *Reihana Grant (Kapahaka leader). *Olivia Cadwallader (Jump Jam and Kapahaka leader and school ambassador.) * Jorja Button (Kapahaka leader). *Kallum Pike (House captain). *Amelia Butcher (Jump Jam, Kapahaka, HPS leader. House captain and school ambassador.)
A new role this year is the ‘school ambassador’. These four students (Sam, Amelia, Olivia and William) will be those we call on to meet and greet visitors, represent the school at events etc. They are amazing students who make a wonderful contribution to our school.

No doubt our ambassadors will be busy in week 4 this term when the Education Review Office team come to spend a few days with us, 3-6 November. The team will meet with staff, students, BOT and families. A schedule of their meetings will be published in next weeks newsletter soon. We really look forward to the opportunity to sharing the fantastic things that are happening at Carterton School with the team.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Pet Day last Friday. It was a great morning. Our children are so caring and thoughtful with their animals. They were all a credit to you. There was an amazing array of pets on show – including ducklings, goats, puppies, birds, cats, dogs, lambs, calves. Thanks for your involvement and support of this special, wonderful traditional school day. Thanks to Lesley Kennedy for her awesome organisation!
School organisation for 2015. With the changes to staffing and roll numbers this year it is likely that there will be a slightly different organisation for 2015. We have a large number of new entrants already on the list for 2015 start. We have many fantastic opportunities coming up, with digital learning and student inquiry as a focus for 2015. Teachers and the BOT have started planning exciting developments. The Board are planning a get together with you to let you know about what is coming up in the future, and to hear your views and ideas, later this term.

Thank you to the parents how have put their names forward as being interested in becoming BOT members. The board is meeting this week to discuss their next steps in filling the current vacancy.

Our next LIVE radio programme will be aired on Thursday 30 November. This is a wonderful hour of entertainment professionally planned, prepared and presented by our students with the help of Access Radio. Check out the school web site for a link to the podcast if you miss the first airing.

School uniform reminders – It is fantastic to see almost every one with a navy sun hat on. We have decided that hats must be worn whenever we are outside after 9.30am. We often do Jump Jam and fitness at the start of the day and hats can be a bit tricky then. Anyone without a hat has to sit on the deck outside R7. Any tights worn under skirts etc should be navy blue – and not have any patterns / decorations of them. Our second hand uniform shop has lots of very cheaply priced items for sale if you need to top up.

We always like to talk to you and hear from you about your children’s learning.  At the moment teachers are contacting some of their parents to complete a survey about this.  If you would like to be involved as well please contact your child’s teacher or leave a message at the office.

The next series of Reading Together sessions will start next Wednesday at 1:45 in Room 1.  Parents who have completed this in Term 2 have noticed huge progress in their child’s reading and are enjoying reading with their children.  Please contact Wendy Taylor at school if you are interested in attending or come along on Wednesday.  I look forward to seeing you there.

Child's Name.........…………..    Rm#…..........

Dear Parents and Caregivers
We have been celebrating a lot of successes this term already! Congratulations to the students who were awarded ‘Student of the week’ certificates last week at assembly, these children have been demonstrating our 3Rs by working hard, supporting others and showing respect around our school and in the community. We also celebrated our basketball teams success and academic excellence of some students who took part in the ‘Australian Competitions’. Several of you will also have received a ‘3Rs postcard’ in your post box – staff are acknowledging children who are consistently demonstrating the 3Rs by sending a surprise post card to you.
Out of school, two of our sports stars have achieved fabulous success in soccer. Jonty S (Rm 11) and Nahum M (Rm 11) have both been selected for the Ole Football Academy in Wellington . This takes a lot of commitment as they have training several times a week. Fantastic news boys! Congratulations!

New look web site!  Since her return to work Raewyn Harnden has been working on an update of our school web site. The site has up to date information and a calendar of school events to help keep you informed. There are also links to the class blogs where you can keep up to date with what is happening in the classrooms. All school organisation information is accessible through the site. Newsletters will be automatically updated onto the site. We welcome feedback – is there anything else you might like to see on our web site? www.carterton.school.nz

Next week the Education Review Office team of three will be here from Monday lunch time to Wednesday afternoon. They are looking at all aspects of school life and have meetings with the BOT, staff and students. They will attend the whānau hui on Tuesday evening and may like to talk with another small group of parents. We will let you know if we need some available parents / whānau nearer the time! It will be exciting to share our wonderful school and our work with the team.

Last week we become aware of a cyber-safety issue that occurred last term with an inappropriate person (adult) contacting a student via a gaming / messaging site (this happened at home but a message came in during school time). Related sites have been blocked at school. We have re visited our cyber safety rules with all children, talking them through the agreement signed at the beginning of the year.  It is really important that we all tell children that if they see or hear anything they are unsure online of they MUST tell an adult as soon as possible. If you have any questions or need any advice please feel free to contact us at school. The web site www.netsafe.org.nz gives lots of tips for managing the internet with young people.

Kapahaka Tuakana Wananga at Hurunui o Rangi Marae: Last Thursday and Friday.  I was greatly impressed by the excellent commitment, participation and energy all the tamariki put into their learning. They worked extremely hard with great passion and enthusiasm. The singing started as soon as we got on the bus Thursday morning, and didn’t end until they got off the bus back at school on Friday. What an amazing group of tamariki!

Carterton School Kapa haka Tuakana Group and Akonga Maori are performing at the Wairarapa REAP Primary Schools Kapahaka Festival. This Thursday 30th October: Held at the Anzac Hall Featherston. The group will travel together by bus, to Featherston. This festival is a great opportunity to share and celebrate ours and others learning in kapahaka performing arts. We will perform some of the waiata and haka that we have been learning this year in Kapahaka, and also watch other schools perform what they have been learning.  We will return to school by 2.50 pm (earlier if the weather is wet). All the tamariki need to be at school by 8 am, and meet in the hall to put on costumes and moko as we won’t get the time when we arrive in Featherston. Your help with costumes and moko would be greatly appreciated. The bus will be leaving school at 8.30 am to ensure that we arrive in time for the powhiri and ready to perform at 9.15 (Akonnga Māori) and 9.30 (Tuakana). Children will need to return the permission slip to enable them to attend the festival. The school will be paying for the bus cost.
Kapahaka tamariki will need to wear their Carterton School uniform and bring their morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, water bottle, sunhat (there will be some food for sale). Costumes will be provided for the day (Black or dark navy blue shorts can be worn under costumes, as long as they are not too long or visible). Tamariki can wear their own pounamu or taonga if they have one. Girls need to have their hair half up, half down—any uncertainty about this then bring hair tie and brush to school and we will do it for them.
Our performances are scheduled for 9.15 (Akonga Māori) and 9.30 (Tuakana) . We would love to have whanau and friends come to watch, shout out and support us! Please note that doors to the hall will be open for 5minutes between performances, and then closed. You will not be able to leave or enter during a performance. The children have been specially selected to perform and are representing the school, so excellent behaviour is expected at all times. We appreciate your continued support of the Carterton School Kapahaka and look forward to our performance on Thursday.  Whaea Lesley Standish  (Cell: 0274 501554. Home: 379 5547)
